Nutrition

Proper nutrition is extremely important to the health of your bird. For expert nutrition information on your particular breed, please see your veterinarian.

In the wild, birds have been observed eating fruit, insects, berries, nuts, snails and more. Macaws have even been seen eating clay to augment their diets with minerals they don’t normally receive!

At home, your bird will require a balanced diet to lead a happy, healthy life. It is generally accepted that approximately half a bird’s diet should consist of seeds, with the other half consisting of fresh green vegetables and fruits.

Geisler bird products are an excellent source for healthy bird nutrition. A preferred blend of nature’s finest seeds and grains, Geisler’s Superior Nutrition Boxed Diets are vitamin and mineral enriched — creating a total diet that is both nutritious and varied. The bag-in-a-box package features a special barrier that seals in freshness.

Certain human foods can be shared with your bird as treats. These can include unsalted nuts, whole-grain pastas, unsweetened breakfast cereals and low-fat cheeses. However, there are certain human foods that should NEVER be shared with your bird. In addition to avoiding salty, fatty or greasy snacks, you should NEVER give your bird chocolate, which contains theobromine, a chemical that is safely digested by humans, but can fatally harm your bird. Avocados can also be toxic to birds, as can any form of alcohol.

Never share with your bird a piece of food that you have started eating yourself. Your saliva contains bacteria that can be toxic to your pet, so don’t take a bite of something and then give it to your bird—cut it up first.

A cuttlebone, which can be purchased at most pet stores, should be placed in your bird’s cage so it can provide extra calcium and other minerals to your pet.

Remember that your bird needs a generous supply of fresh water to stay healthy.
